The Friends of St Martin’s

St Martin’s Church from Queen Square

The Friends of St Martin’s Church, Haverfordwest, was established in 2015 as a means whereby support for the on-going care and maintenance of this lovely church can be shared between regular attenders and others who value it and have a care for its future. It is an organisation which unites all those, throughout the town of Haverfordwest, the county of Pembrokeshire, and further afield who wish to be associated with the worship and work of the Church here.

St Martin’s Church is a part of the United Parish of Haverfordwest, and the Friends of St Martin’s aim to work with the Vicar and the Parochial Church Council to enable this church to continue in its purpose of being a place of prayer and worship, and serving the town and community of Haverfordwest in the twenty-first century.

St Martin’s Church

The Church of St Martin of Tours in Haverfordwest is the oldest Church in the town, with a history dating back to the 12th Century. Its purpose was to serve the spiritual needs of the occupants of the Castle, and their servants who lived within the original town walls. The community it serves has changed a great deal since that time, but one thing has not changed. St Martin’s is still there offering a space for prayer and worship, but also a place where countless births and marriages have been celebrated, and the bereaved have met to mourn and remember.

In spite of its great age, St Martin’s is in good shape now that a programme of external re-pointing and repairs has been completed. But if it is to be fit for centuries to come, we know that more work will be needed year on year.

We are aware that there are many people who have reasons to be grateful for the part St Martin’s has played in their lives. Being married there, having children baptised or attending funerals of family members and friends – all these will make St Martin’s special, in addition to being a worshiper there now or in years gone by.

Friends will be kept informed about events at St. Martin’s, and can request that loved ones be remembered in prayers at the Church on a specified day each year.
